HENLEY IN ARDEN PARISH - PRAYER DIARY

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for everyone…

1 Timothy 2:1

The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

James 5:16

We all pray. Each one of us might pray in a different way and at different times, but we all pray. Having said that, praying is not always easy. It is difficult to pray regularly, and we don’t always know what to say in our prayers.

Many churches use a ‘Prayer Diary’ to help them in their prayer discipline. If you haven’t come across this practice before, here is how it works.

You will notice that there is a central blank column titled ‘My own Topic’. Think about the people and the situations that you wish to pray for regularly. Write them in this column. For example: Maybe there is a particular person you pray for regularly. Write their name somewhere in the central column. Let us say that you’ve written their name in the third space. This means that on the third day of the month you will make sure that you pray for them. Now, obviously, you can pray for them as often as you want! But having their name on the list means that each month they definitely won’t be forgotten. You don’t have to fill the whole column! But it is amazing how many personal items come to mind!

Once you have added your personal topics in the central column, the Prayer Diary is ready to be used.

Each day, check what day of the month it is; your Prayer Diary will give you something to include in your prayers regarding our church life, there might be a personal topic, and there will be an area of the town to remember in prayer.

How do we pray for an area of the town! We can keep it simple and just ask God to bless that area, or we might want to think about people we know who live in that area, or we might want to look up on the Church Electoral Roll to see who lives there and to pray for them. In this way, each month, we all pray for each other. Of course, to complete the picture, on the thirtieth day of the month we particularly remember those church members who live outside the area.

I hope you find this Prayer Diary helpful. I am certain that disciplined praying brings great spiritual reward. Try it in your church and town.

PRAYER OF THE MONTH

Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ,

for all the blessings you have won for us,

for all the pains and insults you have borne for us.

O most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother,

may we know you more clearly,

love you more dearly,

follow you more nearly,

now and for ever. Amen.

St. Richard of Chichester (1197-1253)
